What is a Bafang mid drive kit?

It's a motor system that powers your bike through the crank, not the wheels. It turns the chainring, and as you shoft through the bikes gears, you vary the torque and speed of the wheel. This allows for better hill-climbing, more torque / speed, and increased overall efficiency compared to hub motors.

Is a Bafang mid drive kit legal in Australia?

The 250W version is legally used on Australian roads and paths with pedal assist (no throttle, and speed limited). Higher wattage kits (500W, 750W and 1000W) are only for private property or off-road use.

Can I install a Bafang mid drive kit myself?

Yes! With some basic tools and mechanical knowledge, many riders install it themselves. We offer video guides and support if you need help.

How fast can a Bafang mid drive motor go?

The 250W model supports speeds up to about 35kms/h (depending on chainring size), but should be limited to 25km/h per legal limits. Higher wattage kits can go much faster (into the 70’s!), but those must be used off-road only.

What's included in a Bafang mid drive kit?

Typically: Motor with controller & cabling looms, display, throttle, brake sensors, gear sensor and chainring. The battery is often sold separately or as part of a combo pack.

Is a mid drive kit better than a hub motor kit?

For hills and performance riding, yes. Mid drives offer better torque and battery efficiency , especially for climbing or carrying loads. However, be aware that the speed will drop when you gear down to increase torque. If you don’t like changing gears much, this is NOT the motor to choose, you should use a Hub Motor.
