In some senses, electric bicycle maintenance is no different from that of a non-assisted bike. However, depending on the motor type, some components, in particularly the drivetrain (cranks, chain and sprockets), can be subject to greater forces and potentially increased wear.
Therefore, washing your ebike regularly and keeping it well maintained is of utmost importance if you want to get the most out of the bike, and the longest life from component parts.
Firstly, a clean bike is a happy bike. Dirt, dust and mud increase wear on components and, when mixed with water and chain lube, it can form a gunky awful paste that will, at best, decrease the efficiency of your bike and, at worst, quickly grind through consumable parts, wearing them out much more quickly than they should.
Where e-bikes do differ from regular bikes is in their electronics and wiring. Although many components are sealed from water ingress under regular riding conditions, it is very highly advisable not to use a high-pressure washer on e-bike electric components.
