Picking the Right E-Bike Motor for Commuting vs Off-Road vs Cargo: What to Consider

Electric bikes are taking over Australia – you’ll see them in Sydney traffic, on Melbourne bike paths, tearing up Blue Mountains trails, or carrying kids and shopping home. Every year, at Rev-Bikes, we assist hundreds of riders to choose the best motor for their lifestyle.

An e-bike's heart is its motor. If it is not suited to your needs, it will leave you either halfway up a hill or fighting with a heavy load. This short guide shows the best motor for commuting, off-road fun or cargo duties, with real examples from our most popular models.

The Two Main Motor Types You’ll See at Rev-Bikes

All e-bikes use either a hub motor (built into the wheel) or a mid-drive motor (mounted at the crank). So, the difference is straightforward:

  • Hub motors are silent, need little maintenance, and provide power in a very smooth way straight to the wheel. But they are suitable only for very flat to slightly rolling areas.

  • Mid-drive motors pass power through your bike's gears, giving much more torque for climbing and carrying heavy loads. They feel more natural because they use the same gearing you’d pedal yourself.

Australian road rules are important too: on public roads, e-bikes are limited to 250W continuous power with pedal-assist only (no throttle) and assistance cuts out at 25 km/h. All Rev-Bikes road-legal models meet these rules. For off-road or private property, we also offer 500W–1000W kits for extra grunt.

Commuting: Smooth, Efficient, Worry-Free

The 250W rear hub motor is perfect for city riding. It gives instant consistent power without lagging in traffic. Battery range stays excellent because the motor never works too hard. Most Melbourne commuters choose this setup daily.

Our Revelo Step-Thru uses a quiet 250W hub with a torque sensor. The sensor reads your effort and delivers exactly the right assistance. Riders arrive at work fresh and save hundreds of public transports monthly. Range reaches 80 km on one charge.

Look for integrated lights, fenders, and a lightweight frame under 22 kg. These features make daily commuting effortless and enjoyable. A decent motor for commuting will be like a reliable friend, not an overpowering machine at any time.

Off-Road: Torque, Traction, and Toughness

Off-road trails demand serious torque and durability from the motor. Mid-drive systems shine here because they use your gears to multiply power. A 750W mid-drive can produce over 120 Nm on loose climbs.

Our ReVive Fat-Tyre runs a Bafang M620 mid-drive motor with full suspension. Four-inch tyres and hydraulic brakes handle roots and rocks easily. Riders get 40–55 km of aggressive trail range from the 672Wh battery.

Choose motors with IP65 water resistance and strong torque sensors. Hydraulic disc brakes and fat tyres complete the package. Test ride one and you’ll feel why trail riders never go back to hub motors.

Cargo: Power to Move Real Weight

Cargo bikes are those that transport kids, groceries, or tools daily. They need massive low-end torque to start under heavy loads. Both powerful rear hubs and mid-drives work well depending on terrain.

Our Defender Long-Tail uses a 750W rear hub with 95 Nm torque. It carries 180 kg total and stays stable even with two children on the rear deck. The low centre of gravity prevents tipping when loaded.

In hilly areas customers upgrade to our mid-drive cargo kits. Extended range 672Wh batteries and reinforced racks handle daily deliveries. When total weight is often over 150 kg, hydraulic brakes are a must.
